Our guest this episode is Steve Dayney, head of Offshore North America for Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. We start our conversation with the company itself—what is Siemens Gamesa and what does it do? Then we get into some of the challenges facing this still emerging industry, and we discuss some ways in which Siemens Gamesa is working with stakeholders to deliver a trained workforce and a robust business supply chain to build the industry. 

Then we shift gears a little bit. Steve shares some news about an historic award that Siemens Gamesa was conditionally awarded. 

We close by looking to the future. Steve shares his thoughts about how he sees the industry developing in the near-term, mid-term and long-term, and he shares an area that Siemens Gamesa will be focusing on.

My guest this episode is our own Liz Burdock, President and CEO of Oceantic Network, formally the Business Network for Offshore Wind. Our conversation covers both strengths and challenges facing the US offshore wind industry today. 

We begin by looking at where the market stands today in terms of its potential capacity, current state commitments and the project development pipeline. We discuss recent lease activity, the entry of major international companies into the US market, what that says about investor confidence and what it may mean for the industry’s growth. We obviously talk about the IPF, the Network’s International Partnering Forum which is just a few weeks away in New York, as well as other activities the Network has planned later this year. Liz shares how the industry’s rapid growth also poses significant supply chain challenges, and she wraps up by looking West and discussing the possibilities for offshore wind in the Pacific. 

At least I thought she was wrapping up, but then she turns the tables on me and starts asking me questions. So, I share some of what I’ve seen and learned as someone who’s still relatively new to the industry.

Our topic for this episode is Technical Standards for Offshore Wind, and our guest is Walt Musial, Manager of Offshore Wind at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, or NREL. 

Walt was in Washington, D.C. recently to chair a meeting of the Offshore Wind Technical Advisory Panel, which is where we caught up for this interview. We begin by discussing how Walt and NREL first started getting involved in offshore wind, and then we get into the history of offshore wind technical standards. We discuss the need for U.S.-specific standards and offshore-specific standards. Walt shares his vision for the U.S. Offshore Wind Standards Initiative, describes the process that’s in place, and we close by discussing next steps and how people can get involved.

California, the world’s fifth largest economy, has some of the best offshore wind resources in U.S. waters. The state’s ambitious climate legislation, SB-100, calls for 100 percent clean, carbon-free electricity by 2045. This creates an opportunity for floating offshore wind to contribute to California’s clean energy mix. California State Assembly member David Chiu joins host Brandon Burke to discuss California’s AB-525 OSW legislation and the opportunities it will provide the state.
