Project offshore could deliver up to 924 MW to New Yorkers and power more than 320,000 homes

BALTIMORE — The Oceantic Network, the leading organization working to advance offshore wind and other ocean renewable industries and their supply chains, congratulates member companies Eversource and Ørsted on the completion of an environmental review for their joint Sunrise Wind project. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) released a Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) authorizing construction of up to 84 turbines, enough to provide 924 MW of clean power generation. The project has already secured an offtake agreement through a contract with the State of New York to deliver 880 MW. A final Record of Decision (ROD) from the federal government is expected in a few weeks.
Over the past three years, BOEM has completed seven environmental reviews on eight commercial-scale projects. Earlier today, the Department of Interior also announced it was advancing an auction in the Central Atlantic for mid-2024.

“Advancing the Sunrise Wind project is critical to the advancement of the domestic supply chain for offshore wind, including directly supporting shipbuilding in Louisiana and steel manufacturing in upstate New York. On a broader level, advancement of the Sunrise Wind project further strengthens confidence in the U.S. permitting system as the administration is nearing its halfway point in reviewing 16 projects and conducting seven new lease auctions by the end of 2024, approving 8 GW of power generation for construction. Adhering to this commitment is critical to drawing new and securing old investments in the U.S. supply chain and the Network applauds BOEM’s consistent efforts to reach this goal.”
