BALTIMORE — The Oceantic Network, the leading organization working to advance offshore wind and other ocean renewable industries and their supply chains, celebrates today’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announcement of its approval for the Atlantic Shores South offshore wind project. This morning, BOEM issued its final Record of Decision (ROD) authorizing construction of up to 2,800 MW of offshore wind power generation off the coast of New Jersey. The federal government has now approved nine commercial projects with a capacity of more than 13,000 MW.
Today’s approval is the latest in a series of recent actions by BOEM to bolster the U.S. offshore wind industry, namely the approval of Construction and Operations Plans (COPs) for Sunrise Wind and Empire Wind, both offshore New York, and New England Wind 1 and 2 off the coast of Massachusetts. Once complete, these projects, along with Atlantic Shores South, will have a combined capacity of 8,200 MW, enough to power more than three million homes.
The following statement can be attributed to Sam Salustro, vice president of strategic communication at Oceantic Network:
“BOEM’s consistent efforts to move projects through the regulatory process are pushing the offshore wind industry forward. The Atlantic Shores South Record of Decision marks the agency’s ninth approval totaling more than 13 GW of offshore wind energy in the development pipeline. It also gives the State of New Jersey a shovel-ready project set to deliver jobs, investment, and clean energy. The Network appreciates the state’s efforts as an early partner and key industry ally, advancing the industry with bold procurements and forward-looking transmission and port strategies. We also congratulate Network member Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind for achieving this milestone.”
